Building plant communities in unlikely spaces.
The project rests along the shore of a mountain lake deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, a region known for its biologically diverse habitats and species. Nine roofs cover four separate buildings tucked throughout the property, each blanketed with a vegetated roof, visually and ecologically integrating the buildings with the forested site.
Overview
Plant species include warm and cool-season grasses, perennials, and groundcovers. Aside from being a beautiful amenity, the roofs showcase how to creatively integrate green infrastructure into residential projects—from reducing rooftop temperatures and minimizing stormwater runoff to promoting biodiversity— all while creating an extraordinary visual amenity.

The design goals were to integrate the buildings into the site and maximize the green roofs' ecological impact. Creating lush and healthy plantings starts with the right system, growing media depth, and attention to microclimates and light. The Living Roofs design team achieved this through a rigorous design process to create more than just a beautiful amenity - the roofs reduce stormwater runoff, cool the structures, and provide important wildlife and pollinator food and habitat.
