An exterior living room for the University of Tennessee.
Green roofs on the new University of Tennessee Engineering Services Facility help keep the building cool, manage stormwater, and provide a living research environment for students.
Overview
With a grand view overlooking the Tennessee River as it flows past the University of Tennessee, the Facility boasts the latest in engineering research technology and equipment and over 7,000 square feet of green roof distributed across several of its upper levels. The architects describe the green roofs as an "exterior living room," and we couldn't agree more.

Late Game Solution
Living Roofs was brought in to this project at the last minute to install the plants and irrigation on two roofs and pedestal pavers on three separate terraces. The aggressive timeline, complicated site logistics, and challenging roof access were a bit tricky, but the construction team quickly adapted and delivered a flawless finished product on-time and on-budget. This project proves that there’s no wrong time to involve the Living Roofs team.

No Fuss, No Headaches
This nearly autonomous green roof doesn’t need much help now, but ensuring proper plant establishment was a must! Our Care & Maintenance team provided two years of maintenance in part to fulfill American Hydrotech’s Thrive and Coverage Warranty for the Garden Roof Assembly. Now that ongoing maintenance has been handed over to the owner, they only have to monitor periodic drain inspections, minor irrigation adjustments, and overall plant health.
